After it was evident the German Nazis and their allies would lose the Second World war, frantic efforts were undertaken to clear all traces of their hideous deeds. Mass graves covering the corpses of civilians murdered in mass executions were dug up again, and inmates of concentration camps such as these three Jewish men were forced to carry the remains of the corpses to this bone-mill to grind the victims' bones to powder which was then thrown into a river. One of the men on the picture had been forced to bury the victims' corpses a few years earlier and had recognized his wife among the dead.
