Calgary company sells health insurance that avoids long hospital waits

Wednesday, February 27, 2002

CALGARY (CP) - A Calgary company is selling health insurance to Canadians who want to avoid long hospital waiting lists by going outside the country for medical procedures. PPI Financial Group says its coverage gives policyholders access to services anywhere in the world within three to four weeks after a diagnosis is made.

"We're paying for (the health-care system), but we're having to wait two to three months to see a specialist," said Probe. "The wait lists are what hurt people."

The insurance is pricey. For example, a healthy 44-year-old man will pay $1,400 US a year, including a $2,500 US deductible, for the policy. As with most insurance, the coverage is only for those with no pre-existing medical conditions.
