How does one decide if a particular financial planner/consultant is worthy of trust?

I would think that this is a challenging question for most people. I was lucky to have been on the Board of Trustees for a pension committee for about five years so I could watch a particular guy make forecasts, give advice and explain the results (good or bad) to us.

Mindmeld, you know a lot more about finances and investing than I do. You still spent about six months evaluating a particular advisor.

I wonder how other people do it.
