Mitsubishi Electric Says Profit Will Lag Forecast (Update2)

Tokyo, Feb. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Mitsubishi Electric Corp.'s operating profit for the fiscal year will lag its estimate of 30 billion yen ($223 million) because Japan's third-largest mobile- phone maker sold fewer handsets and semiconductors.

``We won't meet our forecast,'' spokesman Koji Kawaharasaki said, responding to a Nihon Keizai newspaper story that said the company will post an operating loss. The company posted an operating profit of 195.3 billion yen last fiscal year.

Mitsubishi Electric is losing share of the market for mobile phones after rival NEC Corp. increased sales by introducing popular foldable models. The company will probably report a group operating loss of 50 billion yen in the year ending March 31, the paper said, without citing sources.

``Mitsubishi should really identify key products that boost its earnings,'' said Sadaji Shibata, general manager at Daiwa Asset Management Co., which manages 1.5 trillion yen in Japanese equities, including Mitsubishi Electric shares. ``Industrial machinery, satellites and rockets may be good areas.''
