Setting up shop in Baltimore, rather than San Francisco or other technology hot spots, could be the smartest fiscal move a high-tech company can make, according to a study released yesterday that analyzed the cost of doing business in different areas.
Boyd Co., a Princeton, N.J.-based corporate relocation company, compared the expenses associated with running a 500-person research and development office in 17 tech centers across the nation, and found Baltimore to be the least expensive.
San Francisco was the costliest, followed by Santa Clara County, the urban area that is home to Silicon Valley, then New York and Boston. Fairfax County was named the ninth most expensive U.S. spot in the survey.
Boyd also estimated the costs in three Canadian cities: Toronto, Ottawa and Calgary, all of which were more affordable than the surveyed U.S. cities. With estimated annual overhead of $27.7 million, Calgary offered the greatest savings, Boyd said. |
