Ciena has since said that after announcing the ONI merger, 2 of their large, strategic customers told them that CIEN should know that they aren't going to buy in the near-term. It had nothing to do with the merger, the customers just decided that they aren't going to spend the money in the quarter and thought CIEN should know this. Actually it was one customer but they are assuming another backs out as well given their body language.

It is hard to believe just how bad telco environment is... Comparison to SoCal Aerospace might be a good one. Huge deficit by government = huge debt load by service providers.

CIEN believes the key to getting out of all of this is solving the last-mile and a Napster-type of application taking off. There was progress made on the political front today...
