According to Cornell University circa 1968, a complete diet that would sustain you, given the RDA figures then, could be got by a bread that used stone ground flour, added a table spoon of wheat germ, same of farina, 1/2 cup of skim milk powder, and 3 ounces of soy flour. The bread may allow that no specific dietary or vitamin deficiencies take place. It was given the name of Cornell bread. Theory was that you don't need anything else to survive.
The RDA figures were only arrived at statistically and they basically ignore some of the bodies needs that it gets from characteristics of some foods, in that they scour the intestines, promote digestion, inhibit bacteria and donate some chemicals to our body that we have only recently begun to understand we may need. The effect of fruit and vegetables in promoting health and fighting cancers by boosting the immune system and eliminating free radicals has only recently been guessed at recently. We know the effect is there, why we are not sure. The vitamin craze was based on studies of health cancer rates amongst people who raw ate fruit. It was not demonstrated that it was the vitamins that were doing it. The fruit body itself may be what is needed.
