OT pH...

In a system consisting of hydrogen and oxygen at 25C and 1 bar pressure we have H2O(l), H2O(g), electrons, H+(aq), OH-(aq), H2(g), O2(g), etc. Thermodynamic calculations show that under these conditions neutral pH is pH 7. A more realistic system, however, would allow CO2 in the gas phase. Neutral pH (conc. OH- = conc. H+) under these conditions is about 4.7. Therefore it is perfectly reasonable that water in a soil in equilibrium with the atmosphere has a pH around 5. A freshly opened tin of Coca-cola has a pH near 1, I believe (high pCO2).
