The movies were similar in the following ways:

Like a painting that looks beautiful from a distance but disjointed and messy when you look at the parts close up. These too movies are overwhelming when you let them roll over you wholistically but kind of tedious when analysing them by bits and pieces.

Lots of artistic licence on the music.

The master of ceremonies caught up in a sub plot the competes with the simple little love story.

The master of ceremonies also caught up in the romance and conflicted over it.

A fantastic montage of music, dance and scenery that crosses over from subplots to stage production, woven throughout the movie and overshadowing the simple story plot.

The decadance of the brothel life surrounding the wishful starlet/damsel/prostitute.

Stretching at the moral fabric of the antagonist.

The period debauchery of the bohemian movement of French artisans and the night clubs of American cities.

The only breathtaking musical production to make it as a mainstream movie in a couple of decades.
