<Recession? What recession? The markets received a double-dose of surprisingly positive economic data on Thursday that left some economists wondering whether or not the U.S. is even IN a recession. A startling surge in the fourth-quarter Gross Domestic Product numbers blew away consensus expectations for economic growth, and challenged assumptions that a recession has been underway for at least several months. Adding to the eye-popping data, the Purchasing Management Association of Chicago's index of business activity indicates that business is expanding - the first such reading in 18 months. Even Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan offered an optimistic assessment of the situation on Thursday when he said "increasing signs have emerged that some of the forces that have been restraining the economy over the past year are starting to diminish and that activity is beginning to firm." >
