a not so insignificant portion of that cash might never return [to the market]in our lifetimes

Where will it go? Into the mattress or gold, as is taking place in Japan? Into conservative fixed-income investments? Beyond a certain temporary marginal reallocation to more defensive sectors, the cash will be inevitably drawn back to those sectors with the highest returns, immediately after those higher returns are achieved, just as they do with mutual funds. As these higher returns are correlated with higher risk, this inevitably suggests equities and technology. Tech is the most dynamic sector of the economy, so it offers the most dynamic returns as well, in spite of the periodic booms and busts.
