The use of unoriginal music in Moulin Rouge gives it (for me) a dubious claim as a real "musical", certainly not one in the traditional sense. But I am in the purist minority here, I guess, as Contact got the Tony for Best Musical a couple of years ago and had no original music and the cast didn't even sing. (But wow, could they dance) At least Nicole did her own numbers.

Disclaimer: I did a lot of musical theatre in the old style and know that I am now a dinosaur. I loved the bare stage of Fantastiks, where the actors had to do the work, not the special effects teams.

The Grammies brought home just how very old I am. I've never seen so little talent get so much credit and believe they really deserved it.
