The greens yield calcium. They are best when boiled wityh a bit of (fried) bacon & contain finely diced turnip root & onion diced hot pepper. Serve is cornmeal fried catfish & black eyed peas or red beans & cornbread.

In some areas where there is a large amount of iodine in the soil the turnip root becomes a slight source of iodine.
