AMD and Hewlett Packard combine to develop new Ink technologies for Business Applications

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mar. 1, 2002--AMD (NYSE:AMD - news ) Advanced Micro Devices and Hewlett Packard Corp. today announced a joint development program to aid businesses in their printing needs. The target of their development efforts will be to provide new ink jet cartridges to augment the existing CMYK (Cyan Magenta Yellow Black) with a fifth color.

This new color cartridge will be targeted at the RED section of the color spectrum, and is designed to appeal to those businesses whose financial statements use inordinate amounts of red ink.

Jerry Sanders of AMD states "AMD has identified a continual and chronic need for our printers that a solid red ink cartridge will address. We believe such a cartridge will improve productivity so that IT personnel will spend less of their time changing color ink cartridges for the financial departments of businesses, both large and small"

"Our experience", says Mr. Sanders, "is that our IT personnel were spending too much of their time on mundane tasks servicing the printers of our corporate accounting personnel when they print their weekly and monthly roll-ups, as well as quarterly and yearly financial statements.

Together with Hewlett Packard, AMD and HP identified the problem as excessive use of the color RED , which is produced through various amounts of the CMY combinations in the cartridge color. By addressing this need with a dedicated red ink cartridge, companies such as AMD can print their financial statements without regard to the amount of losses and the red ink consumed in printing such statements.

With engineering samples already in hand, Sanders has indicated that AMD is saving at least 3 man months time per quarter in personnel usage from the IT department due to the use of these new ink cartridges.

Carly Fiorina Chairman and CEO of HP, commented that "AMD was way ahead of the curve in identifying this need for a dedicated red ink cartridge. We applaud Jerry Sanders and his team for bringing this to our attention. AMD's long history in printing with heavy red ink demands has put them in an excellent position to identify engineering solutions to this seemingly intractable problem."

Ms Fiorina goes on to say " We at HP can see widespread needs for this cartridge, especially as we ourselves near the completion of our acquisition of Compaq Computer. Once that is completed, we estimate we can save 30 personnel in our IT and financial departments from the tedious tasks of ink jet cartridge replacement by the use of these dedicated red ink cartridges."

"We applaud AMD and their engineering foresight that has led to a solution to this problem", said Ms. Fiorina.
