Cutting spending till revenue exceeds outgo.
Welfare reform.
Executing the mentally retarded.
Granting favored nation status to corrupt regimes.
Putting more police on the streets.
Passing NAFTA/GATT
Ability to raise scads of campaign cash, including dubious sources.

Those are issues touted mostly by Republicans. Other than a scanty few social program type bills and pronouncements that won some praise from women, blacks and gays, there was little there that seemed very Democratic.

Clinton helped foster and lead a moderate coalition of Dems into power and once in power, usurped agendas to his right by making them his own. He was a top-class campaigner, and once in office, he angered most Republicans by borrowing their agenda and getting stuff done that they had jabbered about for years.

(As for my 'left tendencies, you are mostly mistaken. I am fiscally conservative (though I prefer the term 'fiscally sane). On most other issues, I'm libertarian. Principally in anti-poverty matters, I am pro-active and lean left.)
