I assume you mean that the Republicans in general defend the practice?

Many Democrats do too, of course. For example, Clinton returned to Arkansas in the midst of his 1992 campaign to be there for the execution of Ricky Ray Rector. Rector was the prisoner who was so brain damaged from a suicide attempt following the murder he committed that he asked guards to set save the dessert from his last meal so he could eat it after his execution.
