Nokia confirms display problem with popular 8210 cell phones

Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone maker, confirmed Friday that some of its popular 8210 handsets have malfunctioning displays.
The fault, in a batch of phones produced at the end of 2001 and sold early this year mainly in the Nordic countries, causes text to fade especially in bright lights and in cold temperatures, the company said.
The problem was caused by a faulty component provided by a supplier, but the component is no longer in use, Nokia spokesman Tapio Hedman said. "The faulty components have not been used for some time now, and the situation is under control," he said.
Hedman declined to identify the supplier or estimate how many phones were affected.
In a research note earlier Friday, Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein estimated that repair expenses could cost Nokia 50 million euros ($43 million) in profits. Hedman declined to comment on the estimate.
