Ah, but even bacterium are known to exchange genetic material. That's basically sexual reproduction. They're good at it too.
The problem here isn't so much how as why? Why would an organism go to all that trouble instead of essentially just cloning itself? The answer appears to be that higher organism are favored targets of simpler parasites that intend to take advantage of the rich environment a complex organism provides. Genetic variability between individuals, provided by sexual reproduction, means the parasites now have a moving target- -they cannot simply adapt to a single set od biological conditions and then exploit it.
In other words, there is a level of complexity that must be achieved to pass on complexity.
That test is passed at the bacterial level. Probably viral too. |
