>>Buddha was very tolerant & accepting of women ...<<

There are mixed signals on this.

The Buddha does tell stories in which there are enlightened bhikkhunis (nuns), and the Sumyatta Nikaya 5.2 tells us that the idea that women can't achieve enlightenment is not to be believed...

But in "The Discourse on Many Elements" (Majjhima Nikaya 115), the Buddha does dismiss it as impossible that women could reach many of the highest achievements...

...It is impossible that a woman should be the perfect rightfully Enlightened One.
It is possible that a man should be the perfect rightfully Enlightened One.
It is impossible that a woman should be the Universal Monarch.
It is possible that a man should be the Universal Monarch.
It is impossible that a woman should be the King of Gods.
It is possible that a man should be the King of Gods.
It is impossible that a woman should be the King of Death.

It is impossible that a woman should be Brahmaa.
It is possible that a man should be Brahmaa...

Also, Buddha was originally resistive to allowing women to join the Sangha, and had to be talked into it by Ananda.

So, Buddha wasn't exactly PC by today's standards. ;-)
