Its very important for Novell to push this type of "freedom" to its clients. We were able to develop a customized version of a Novell product called iManager. Since its a web-browser based utility, its all in the coding of web pages and passing the data back-and-forth between the utility and eDirectory.

So from this one product, we developed a solution that is tailor-made for each of the "clients" who use this utility to manage a user community that currently sits at just over 6000 and will grow to over 10,000 in a year.

Just to give you an idea of what this means to the hospital I work for...
1) Leveraging DirXML, we've begun to institute an eProvisioning system where eDirectory is the "hub" data store for all user accounts. The amount of time it takes to enable an employee to get "up and running" has decreased dramtically - we're still benchmarking this for an ROI.
2) Developed a tool that matches our business rules and logic
3) Enforced basic policy rules without additional training and expense.
4) Removed access to unnecessary information (since the admins are no longer using traditional tools, they can only "see" what we allow them to see through the utility).
5) Created an environment that will allow us many future paths (such as moving user management closer to the user).

All this because there is the ability to talk to eDirectory via Java code. This would not have been possible without it. I look forward to Mr. Stone's energy/synergy with his focus on "accessing the directory".

Thanks for the kind words :)
