Do you know of any species that has "evoluted" downwards? Why always upward, and for the better?

Because species that are less successful, become extinct.
That's the point. We only see the winners.

As for 'upward' - do you think evolution stops with you? Well, where are your wings? Why can dolphins dive deeper than you? Meanwhile, the most primitive bacilli survive without oxygen. That's more than any human can manage.
