Sam, the "parallel Internet" is simply their internal routing architecture. Really, no different from any other large ISP. Not that big a deal.

The general idea is to keep as much of the path as possible on their facilities, where they have some control over quality. They then hand off to a peer at the closest possible point to the destination. @Home is insistent that they intend to correct problems before the impact "the experience".

That's the theory. In practice, at this point, it means most everything gets dumped in Washington, D.C. :) (Though I have seen it leave the @Home network at other points, the PacBell NAP, MAE-W, etc.)
