The New Scientist recently ran an in depth article on that subject. I could dig it up but you have to be a subscriber.

Yep there is plenty of evidence to prove the earth's magnetic field reverses every million years or so.

Anway, there are mathematical models being built that tries to simulate the earth's magnetic field. Experimental evidence is needed to explore the theory further. So, experiments are going ahead. Just off the top of my head, one experiment intends to use several tons of molten sodium whirling around in a sphere!
