Extremely intellectual people tend to have a low tolerance of repetition, because they understood what was being said the first time.
However, most people don't grasp things the first time they hear them, so they benefit from repetition.
Eventually, people adapt their speaking style to the level of the listeners around them.
Here on the Internet, where we are all in different places at different times, speaking in posts which only communicate if they are read, you have no way of knowing whether someone heard you.
That's one point.
Also, we all repeat ourselves. I am sure you've noticed that. Maybe you don't know that you, yourself, repeat things. Husbands do, wives do, children do, friends do.
We all have our little idees fixe.
That's another point.
Finally, it is very common for repeat audiences to raconteurs with an arsenal of stories to ask them to tell a favorite story again, because they enjoy hearing it.
Those in the audience (small cough) whose function in the conversation is to mutter dryly and scoff may not understand that sentiment. |
