Star Trek IV notwithstanding, this is also a complaint of mine - species do die out and we have no 'obligation' to reserve every last one. IMO the world is truly enhanced by still having whales, and dolphins, and tigers, and elephants... but beetle #735271 is less convincing.

I don't think that an unregulated market would improve moves towards renewable energy. Not while there's cheap things to burn with no costs for the pollution or atmosphere. Not that governments necessarily do look so far ahead - but at least they can. Agreed, it would surely help if coal weren't subsidised, but also if pollution and environmental resources (CO2, for example) were properly charged, by their cost of removal/replacement...
