The COATS exchange had the dubious distinction of being shoddy by Canadian standards. The problem was that several private firms of excellent repute kept listings there to facilitate share trading, it made it a real exchange regardless of the fact that it wasn't. The only thing that was unique about the COATS system was that it was impossible to buy a stock at or near the Bid and usually at the Ask as well. The only tactic I ever discovered for actually buying shares that worked was putting in a limit order at a price just over the current Ask, you had to restrict the limit order only on price though, if you put an "all or none" on it they would just never fill you.

If you ever got interested in a stock on this exchange you usually only did it once. After you purchased 236 shares of a 5,000 share order slightly above the Ask you realized the real exchange name was
