Yeah, I could not think of the name, "Union Carbide" when I posted. I remember reading about the details at the time and thinking that the company really got screwed by having to pay for what was really the fault of India's government.
It is too bad that Gandhi spent his life spinning as he went about his politics. He was convinced that the Indians needed to get back to cottage industry as a solution for their economic problems, and that, combined with Nehru's socialist economic outlook, has help keep India in the economic dumper for the last 60 years.
It really is amazing to look at the Chinese and Indian society on a group, then an individual basis. When these people go abroad, they are very successful at business, but in there own countries, it is still a disaster.
Just look at the Motel and Hotel business on the west coast. It has been taken over by people named "Patel". BTW, the Auto body repair business in LA and New York has been a magnet for Russians, another group that has done well outside their country. Murrays book, "The Bell Curve", identified the Russians as the richest group of immigrants in this country. The Chinese, of course, are known as "The Jews of Asia" for their success outside of China. |
