I give them 6 months to show me something (ie, real marketing! and new products!) otherwise, I fear its more of the same old, same old and that's bad. I don't expect to see Novell transform into say IBM Consulting Services in 6 months but they CAN show me they are serious about their future.

I'm also interested in some of the new products in the pipeline and the evolution of some of their current products (iChain, OnDemand, DirXML). I am also very interested in their foray in the NAS appliance market (from a pure software solution). I state the last item because if I can "re-constitute" current hardware into NAS devices to supplement a SAN solution, its a great money saver for data storage and access. And if you can save companies MONEY, they will buy the solution - its all about ROI.

Additionally, I am very encouraged with my experience with custom development within the Novell products (DirXML and iManage to name a few). There's a new functionality coming in DirXML that we helped with (?) that will allow password sync without installing additional intrusive software (ie, Acct Manager) on a disparate system. I believe this type of development is what will put Novell a cut above other directory companies. Right now its about storing the data safely and securely - tomorrow it will be about managing that data and sharing it with many systems.

MSFT could score a huge win by buying out Novell but then they would be buying the next bigget competitor in this market and even if the US gov allowed it, the EU won't. Besides, MSFT believes it doesn't have to compete with Novell in terms of the Directory since it will tie its Desktop OS into AD with such easy that people will have NO CHOICE but to deploy AD even if they don't want to. Why deploy 2 Directory services when the idea is to collapse them all into one?

Its hard not to say that Novell is sitting exactly in the same position as Netscape did back in 1995/96 - will the suffer the same fate? Will the DOJ finally learn the lesson it has been missing all these years? I think those are more important questions than whether Novell is doling out $.10 options to execs who "haven't earned" them.
