Wonder if gold in my pockets will be harmful to my survival chances in a tsunami....
Before I went to 'merica, I thought I would get some actual sea faring qualifications just in case I needed 'em hiring a sail boat (as a skipper). There was loads of theory... exams and such, and a 5 day sea trail with an examiner on board (a Welshman) and a green crew who I never met before.
Well, anyhow, the crew turned out to be all to be members of some religious sect, I didn't know, but I had to put 'em though the paces. The old Welsh mariner put me though my paces too, as he had witnessed many deaths at sea, and gave me a tough time of it. I passed the exam, much to my relief, but he gave me a book to read to pass the time between passages. It's about the wreck of the "Royal Charter".
The "Royal Charter" was about the best built ship of the times and full of successful goldminers returning from Australia going to retire on their fortunes having been the few that struck it rich. The book is much more detailed then the web site indicated. The weather was a crucial factor, and I've been most attentive to it since I read that book.
All the women and children drowned. Most of the Goldminers sank straight to the bottom loaded up with gold nuggets. A few of the crew survived, there were some incredible acts of bravery.
