On the other hand, AMD isn't doing any service to the industry by putting arbitrary model numbers down, since those don't relate to performance, either.
See what I'm getting at?

No, quite frankly, I don't. AMD is not attempting to serve the industry. And they shouldn't be. They should and are aiming to serve the consumer. They are doing a distinct service to the consumer by showing that a system (w) costing (x) will perform similarly to a system (y) costing (z) on a given set of benchmarks irrespective of MHz or IPC or anything. That's what the TPI initiative is all about. That's (T) as is (TRUE). I know (TRUTH) is a difficult concept for Intel to swallow but thankfully I believe the majority of consumers still put some value on it. I challenge Intel to get on board and come to an agreement on what the details of the TPI should look like. I don't believe they will. And so, we will be left with a series of hand picked benchmarks by both sides which claim to prove the exact opposite thing. It's like our legal system where opposing sides will march out countless expert witnesses with diametrically opposing views. One cancels the other and the juror is simply left with his own common sense of right and wrong on which to base his decision. In fact, I was a juror in just such a case. And at this point in time, I believe common sense says AMD holds the high ground on this issue. If they didn't, AMD's quanti-numbers would have been a miserable failure and AMD's ASP's would have plummeted. They didn't.
