Foreign institutional investors transferred a total of US$211 million from Taiwan to their overseas accounts in the first four weeks of February, according to Securities and Futures Commission of the Ministry of Finance.

According to a top official of UBS Warburg Taiwan, the transfer of foreign exchange out of Taiwan by foreign institutional investors is a temporary capital adjustment as part of the Enron percussions.

The flow of foreign exchange out of Taiwan is not likely to trigger a capital avalanche, the UBS Warburg executive indicated.

In the first four weeks of February foreign institutional investors transferred US$42.067 billion from abroad to Taiwan - slightly less than the US$42.278 billion they remitted to Taiwan in January.
