Now, why all this high praising of Moore "law",
when technology moves close and close to it's physical
limit? Yes, progress is possible, but at what price?
Molecular transistor, quantum transistors, BS transistors...It looks like throwing scaling numbers, 200 - 300 - 500mm, or Micro - Sub-micro - Nano -what's next? Sub-nano, Pico-?, then Femto-transistors? What is the next scientific prefix for extra 10^-3?

Ali.....very well said. I've often had similar thoughts along the same lines. What most people don't realize is that for scaling theory to hold..... everything must scale. For instance... gate TOLERANCES must scale just as
the gate dimensions get smaller and smaller. When designers tell me, we will need ACLV of no more than +/-50A 3 sigma across an entire 200mm2 chip, I simply laugh.
Here's another one. The actual number of dopant ATOMS in a fully depleted 500A channel SOI device may only be several thousand. What's the implication there on Vt control.
You can appreciate this. I once submitted a paper for a very advanced vertical NPN bipolar device which incorporated extremely narrow base widths (using low temp Epi) along with a total self aligning scheme for manufacture. I called it the Ballistic Base (no collisions) Super Self-aligned transistor.....aka... the (BBSS) transistor or the (BS)^2 transistor. Needless to say, my management made me change the title. The paper got accepted.
