For example, I can remember when there was a reluctance from the marketplace to embrace the Pentium over 486's, Intel actually went into the white-box making business, churning out whole complete systems for resellers to slap on their own brandnames.

I also remember Intel making complete Pentium Pro servers in the same vein to get those off the ground. Probably helped make the Xeon program what it is today. It really helps having the money and expertise to be able to do this.
