let me take you way way way way back when new pr rating was introduced. It was postulated that unsuspected buyer may confuse pr with frequence and assume that the performance is equal to that of p4 with the same clock and that would be misleading. Now following the same logic path you want that unsuspected customer, as Dan pointed out, to assume that athlon xp 1900+ performs on par with p4-1.6GHz.

now I agree with you here but would not it mean that naming convention is irrelevant to someone who is familiar with performance characteristics of the chip. So we are talking only about "uninformed buyer" here who is not familiar with benchmarks.
Seems to me it is far more deceiving not to use model numbers and uninformed buyer would be cheated out of performance and $$$ if only MHz would be presented. And I know you do not want to cheat buyers, right?
