Oh yes - and you can still use the old analog for that matter.

So, what benefit does the end user receive having CDMA?

CDMA voice quality is better when the connection is good and the batteries last longer. The CDMA coverage is getting better with time but there are still major holes. AWE's one rate coverage is about as good as it gets in the US as it uses all the available analog systems as well as AWE's TDMA.
