The question of the role of intelligence in the design of the universe is distinct from that of the role of intelligence in particular creatures. Man as an inventor may or may not create the computer: that does not mean that he is not employing his intelligence in creating a building or aqueduct or toga.

A pattern might, in some sense, be there. It is a question of what kind of pattern. The fallacy of the Great Monkey thesis is to say that because we might read enormous systemic complexity in randomly produced works of literature, that means that the systemic complexity is in the arrangement of elements. In fact, it is not. It never transcends being a random juxtaposition of elements. In the case of actual biological systems, the ability to "read in" systemic complexity will not suffice. The systemic complexity must be present in the arrangement of elements themselves, or they cannot function. This is qualitatively different, because it entails coordinated changes, the fitting together of parts into a whole, the pacing of development to permit the interaction of systems, etc. What is nerve tissue if it develops slowly and outside of the nervous system? Bone tissue? Arterial tissue? These are all just tumors on existing life forms, or masses of independent tissue without any functionality. At various points, it is necessary to make well- coordinated leaps. Incremental mutation over large periods of time will not account for it........
