Beijing may settle world's mobile future

RELATED SYMBOLS: (QCOM)(CHU)

Mar 5, 2002 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- A commitment
to business in China has paid off for San Diego-based technology group,
Qualcomm. In the lead-up to China's accession to the World Trade Organisation,
the Chinese Government required one of its two mobile telephone companies to set
up a new network, using Qualcomm technology. China Unicom's code division
multiple access (CDMA) cellular network began operations earlier in 2002. By 31
January 2002, it had signed up 439,000 subscribers. However, sources indicate
that Unicom may not be totally committed to its new CDMA technology. Only 30 per
cent of the world mobile phone market uses CDMA, with the rest of the world
using the global system for mobile communications (GSM) standard, developed in
Europe.
