LG, Samsung to see significant notebook order upswing from int’l vendors

South Korea’s LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics expect notebook shipments will rise substantially in 2002 with international vendors raising their orders to South Korea. The two companies are the country’s only notebook contract manufacturers with orders from major international vendors, and their combined shipments are expected to reach 2.6 million units in 2002.
LG recently renewed its contract with Compaq Computer, shipping about one million units to the US vendor this year, up from last year’s 300,000 units. LG is manufacturing a model running on Intel’s mobile Pentium 4 that was originally supplied by Quanta Computer of Taiwan.
IBM will also hand orders of 600,000 units to LG this year, compared to 400,000 units in 2001.
Samsung and Dell Computer’s partnership will continue for another 18 months from March, with monthly shipments of 20,000 to 25,000 units. The South Korean company will receive orders of 300,000-350,000 units from Gateway Computer, about the same as last year, and is negotiating with Hewlett-Packard (HP). Samsung expects to contract manufacture about 760,000 to one million units this year. |
