SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Asian shares built on their powerful advance to hit a 15-month high in Malaysia and another 20-month peak in South Korea on Tuesday, but Tokyo succumbed to profit taking after the previous day's 5.9 percent surge.

The rally outside Japan followed a second day of big gains in the United States, where the Dow Jones industrial average clocked up its highest close since July as investors bet on an imminent recovery in the economy and corporate profits.

"An economic recovery in the U.S. and Asia is becoming clearer," said Shuichi Hida, a portfolio manager at Japan's Sanyo Investment Trust Management.

In the currency markets, the yen broke a four-day winning streak to dip against the dollar.

Tokyo stocks fell after Monday's leap took the Nikkei average's four-day gain to 12 percent, flagging sell signals on technical indicators. The benchmark Nikkei average ended down 101.77 points or 0.89 percent at 11,348.45.
