the way in which the 10kt nuclear threat was handled was ridiculous, outrageous and pathetic.

it was ridiculous to place the entire country on high alert with absolutely no guidance to the people.

it was outrageous not to inform the citizens of NY that they were the prime target because some were afraid that NY folks might leave for a safer place...i cannot believe that our leaders were willing to accept 900,000 American casualties...that they have extensive plans for their own family's safety...but they were not willing to let NY city citizens take a few days in the countryside. it is outrageous to have the mentality that accepts 900,000 dead and wounded Americans to avoid a traffic jam.

it is pathetic that throughout this alert period, none of the 42 agencies working on home defense ever saw fit to spend a little time and money educating the citizens of NYC on how to survive a nuclear blast.

i understand and support the need for secrecy in operations...but once an attack has commenced, it is no longer a doggone secret...our officials thought the attack was underway...they had an obligation to inform us that they thought we were under attack. look...the attackers know when they are attacking, we knew(or thought we knew) about the attack. the big secret was to keep the people who were about to be attacked from knowing and that is wrong.

lots of govt folks were deployed to NYC in an attempt to thwart the attack...what were they looking for? NYC has a population of 8 million people. that is 16,000,000 more eyeballs that could have helped look out for the bad guys.

America's alert status is about to change from the "highest state of alert" to "red alert"...or some other color alert. is that the sum total of what the 42 agencies protecting us are going to tell us. right now red, yellow and green alert status will mean exactly as much as highest alert status to the average American...nothing.

fear happens...it is healthy...panic is different and worse but fortunately easier to avoid...surely somewhere in our government, one leader understands that the way to prevent panic is by planning and training...our leaders are planning and training for their own survival...but damnit, they need to provide all Americans with some planning and training tools too.
