New farmland for new mouths?
Cut the number of new mouths... hence the requirements for contraception, abortion, and proper notification and access to both. (Which I gather are greatly helped by offering education and training to women in particular).

IMO over-population is at the root of most of the world's environmental problems - greed and selfishness account for most of the rest, and religion encourages all three as god will provide and needs more worshippers.
