Certicom Security Built into New Palm i705 Wireless Handheld to Provide Strong Encryption for Enhanced Wireless Messaging

Certicom Extends Relationship with Palm to Provide Industry-Leading
Security for Secure Wireless Transmissions to and from New Palm i705
Wireless Handheld

HAYWARD, CA, March 5 /CNW/ - Certicom, (NASDAQ: CERT; TSE: CIC), a
leading provider of mobile e-business security, today announced that the new
Palm(TM) i705 wireless handheld from Palm, Inc. uses strong security
technology developed with Certicom's popular Security Builder(R) toolkit.
Extending a relationship that began in 1997, Palm, a pioneer in the field of
mobile and wireless Internet solutions, selected Certicom's Security Builder
toolkit to develop strong encryption technology for the new, versatile Palm
i705 handheld to help ensure the integrity of information transmitted through
wireless applications. Transmissions to and from the new Palm i705 handheld
are protected by Certicom's Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC).
Certicom's industry leading security provides end-to-end encryption
behind the firewall, which directly protects enterprises' valuable information
and resources. Mobile workers benefit from increased productivity through the
Palm i705 handheld because they can receive, with a subscription to the
Palm.Net(R) wireless services, their business e-mail and their personal e-
mail, and access the Internet, all on one handheld solution. Because
Certicom's ECC is optimized for wireless devices, the transmissions to and
from the Palm i705 handheld are protected at industry leading standards while
preserving a fast, user-friendly experience.
"Certicom's Security Builder provides the sophisticated tools and
flexibility needed to integrate encryption, digital signatures and other
security mechanisms into the Palm i705 handheld," said Kevin Hell, senior vice
president of product management, Solutions Group, at Palm, Inc. "We are
pleased to provide Palm handheld users with Certicom's trusted security
solutions that meet our strict corporate security standards."
Security Builder is the industry's only cryptographic toolkit offering
optimized ECC complemented by a full suite of cryptographic functionality.
Certicom's ECC technology delivers strong levels of security efficiently and
is designed for use with a full range of computing platforms from servers to
wireless devices.
"We have a long-standing relationship with Palm and are pleased to
provide them with security solutions to meet the challenges of wireless
devices," said Prakash Panjwani, Certicom senior vice president of Business
Development. "By utilizing strong security from Certicom, the Palm i705
handheld gives users a whole new way to use their handhelds by sending and
receiving secure, encrypted text messages with others in real-time."
Certicom has already provided Palm with encryption software for the Palm
VII series, Palm's first wireless handheld series, and the Palm Mobile
Internet Kit, which enables Palm handheld users to connect wirelessly to the
Internet from virtually all Palm handheld computers using a compatible data-
enabled mobile phone.
