Pezz:

You're an idealist after all!

The fundamental point is this: the planet and the ecosystem with every organism in it doesn't give a crap about what happens (ever seen a gibbon in a Greenpeace protest march? No? They just don't care). While some animals are smart enough to be self-aware, to communicate and have advanced social structures, there's nary a one (besides us) that has the brainpower to comprehend extinction. The planet and the ecosystem have seen four or five mass extinctions in the last billion years. Shit happens. We could entertain ourselves by stripping the entire planet down to bedrock and it wouldn't matter to anyone or anything except us (homo sapiens). And that's the point. Maybe we should protect our environment, for our benefit. Maybe we should keep a few Siberian Tigers around, 'cause they look cute and cuddly (from a distance) and because people will pay to see them. But it's not about the planet or the ecosystem, it's just about us.

Ray is a low wattage thinker who has made a career of getting out of his intellectual depth. He rails about the future of "the planet" while simultaneously showing about as much empathy for his fellow human beings as Ted Kaczynski.
