Not notifying NYC authorities is a tough call. Issuing vague and unspecific "security alerts" is worse. The action taken may have had more to do with the Bush Administration tendency to secrecy. I would imagine the most important thing on people's minds was the veracity of the threat; I don't think Guilliani could have helped with that.

Hindsight is 20-20, but the threat was false. I think any coverage ought to make that clear first and foremost. You have to wonder a little why this particular incident is being publicized at this moment by normally secretive administration sources. I wouldn't want to think it had anything to do with #reply-17151309 .
