As I have said before, the Crusades did not occur because of religious differences per se, but because the Muslims were whittling away at the territory of the Byzantine Empire, and specifically gained control of the Holy Land, an important pilgrimage destination. Islam has existed since the 8th century of our era. There have been long periods of peace between Arabs and Christians during that time. What conflict there was was more political than religious.
