New Focus Introduces New Tri-Isolator(TM)

Unique "3-In-1" Isolator Array Results in Needed Cost and Space Savings For Long Haul and Metro Market

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
New Focus, Inc., (Nasdaq: NUFO - news), a leading supplier of innovative products
serving the telecommunications, test and measurement, and photonics tools
markets, today announced the introduction of a new "3-in-1" isolator array
designed for Raman and erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) as well as newer,
lower-cost erbium-doped waveguide amplifiers (EDWAs). Through a patent-pending
design, the new Tri-Isolator(TM) packages three isolators in less space and at
a lower cost than three discrete components. This hybrid array device saves
network space, offers comparable optical performance, and lowers manufacturing
costs for long haul as well as metropolitan and other short-reach systems
providers.

``The Tri-Isolator complements our family of hybrid devices and builds upon our strength in optical component design and manufacturing,'' said Dr. Timothy Day, chief technology officer and co-founder of New Focus. ``With this new product, New Focus continues to address the market trend away from discrete components and toward integrated hybrid passive devices ultimately resulting in significantly lower costs for systems providers. We are currently sampling the Tri-Isolator and have received positive responses from our customers.''

The introduction of this unique device extends New Focus' position as a leader in micro-optic design, passive integration and innovation. The Tri-Isolator offers high isolation at both pump and signal wavelengths, and low insertion loss, polarization dispersion and crosstalk. It is available in single- and dual-stage versions.

This new product will be demonstrated at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference, booth #2501, in Anaheim, California, March 19-21, 2002.

Forward-Looking Statements:

This press release contains predictions, estimates and other forward-looking statements regarding the company's ability to serve the emerging market for hybrid passive components for Raman and erbium-doped fiber amplifiers through the introduction of its Tri-Isolator (TM), product performance advantages of the Tri-Isolator (TM), and the company's leadership position in the design innovative hybrid devices for systems manufacturers. These statements are subject to risks and uncertainties and actual results may differ materially from any future performance suggested above. The risks and uncertainties include (i) manufacturing problems, including lower-than-anticipated production yields, that could limit general availability of this product, (ii) product introductions by competitors that could offer comparable benefits, (iii) the lack of predictability in the demand for hybrid passive components for amplifiers due to business conditions, including excess component inventories, within the telecommunications market, and (iv) sluggish demand, in concert with competitive product offerings, which could change the company's market position within this emerging market. Additional factors that may affect the company's overall performance are listed in the company's most recent 10-Q quarterly report on file with the SEC. New Focus is under no obligation to publicly release any revisions to these forward-looking statements, which may be made to reflect events or circumstances after the date hereof or to reflect the occurrence of unanticipated events.
