With a few additions. Getting back to Jewel's post:
Most of the billions of believers in the world are sensible people in their everyday comings and goings. The extremists are few and far between, however quite visible. I do not consider fanatics and extremists as sensible people so this discussion is not about that. Your question should be, how can people who appear sensible in most ways believe in God.
And that statement also applies to the great majority of non-believers.

And I would like to suggest you can do that "triangulation" and STILL not arrive at faith.
Looking back at your post, I believe you would concur with that.
