I think IA-64 is clearly targeted towards a distinct (and non-desktop) market that should remain distinct from the 64-bit desktop architectures (x86-64 and possible Yamhill) which will be "burdened" with compatibility with the legacy of x86. IA-64 has shown indications of significant scaling with the 2nd generation with future generations promising more.

What are the real competitors for the high-end server market? Alpha will retire from the field. Since PA-RISC is provided by a member of the IA-64 team (HP) it seems to have a more limited future. IBM has Power4 but it seems like there are not a lot of other architectures (Ultra-SPARC, others?). This might be slightly OT to this thread but a brief recap by someone of the current and prospective players in this market would be appreciated.

EDIT: Again, I must read first! Thanks for some comments in a prior post.
