<< Maybe we should protect our environment, for our benefit.>>

My contention is that future generations would thank us if we did.

<<. But it's not about the planet or the ecosystem, it's just about us. >>

I think it’s about more.

When the Crocodile hunter looks into the face of a reptile and exclaims " Ain’t he beautiful mate!" he speaks awed by the spectacular detail of environmental adaptation created over a hundred million years (give or take) Some how I think that this beauty when multiplied by the complex intricacy of millions of species and thousands of ecosystems has intrinsic value….Human perception be damned.

<< The planet and the ecosystem have seen four or five mass extinctions in the last billion years.>>

The rate of extinctions is much faster this time and the potential scope is enormous meaning new species do not have the time to fill in the larger gaps. Leaving one hellofan ugly mess for millions of years...is that what'cha want?

<<, there's nary a one (besides us) that has the brainpower to comprehend extinction.>>

Thus all the more reason to accept the role of stewards

Not being a religious person myself nonetheless I would wonder about the destruction of ecosystems that it took a creator hundreds of millions of years to create just because we believe that we are the crown of creation . The brains that we are so proud of are, after all, only the current evolutionary success story for this nanosecond in time. Our continued dominance is not guaranteed . So perhaps it is about the planet and not about us after all…..

BTW Idealism and trading are not mutually exclusive
