A merger of this size is likely to take a long time -
in years - and the uncertainty rises with time.

It is often that those who are most able usually leave
(or get tapped) first. Which isn't good. OTOH, a weak
job market should help out a bit here.

Other savings and synergies only time will tell, as how
the two cultures blend. (Compaq anyhow is not a monolith,
but a blend of several brands. HP is not as diverse.)

The productivity is going to rise in the PC arena as you
noted. It will also be good for AMD as every penny will
matter, and the combined company will anyway tout
end-to-end power, not just a narrow solution.

I'd also speculate on some other, surround activities -
Dell might need to find a printer, some realignment in
consulting, etc.

Any opinion on Sun?
